Custom -vs- Modular
Your cabinets are the focal point of your kitchen--for this reason, deciding who will build your cabinets is the biggest decision you will make in creating a kitchen. To help you out, we've compiled a list of eleven points to consider in the process of deciding whether to go with custom cabinets or modular units...

Cabinet Manufacturing

Our custom cabinets are built in Paso Robles by people who live here, so your dollars stay local. Modular cabinets are mostly built out of state and some are imported from overseas.

Bids
Some modular dealers charge their customers for a bid. That never happens at Morro Bay Cabinets; our bids are always free.

Service
Morro Bay Cabinets has been manufacturing and installing cabinets on the Central Coast for over 33 years. We take care of any problems with our in-house technicians, and since we make all the parts of our cabinets, including doors and drawers, we can fix anything right here, right now. Modular dealers typically outsource their installation and service, and if any parts are needed, they may have to be shipped from an out-of-state factory.

Built to Fit
Our custom cabinets are built to fit your project and designed to your specifications. Modular cabinets are built in sections of predetermined size that you must choose from. Many times the combination you choose won’t make an exact fit, so they make up the difference with fillers.

Price
A common misconception is that modular cabinets are a bargain and custom cabinets are too expensive. The fact is, when an equal comparison is made, our product is no more expensive, and in many cases, actually costs less. Modular manufacturers have to box and ship their cabinets, and the dealer has to make their profit, all of which add to the price.

Quality
At first glance, modular cabinets in a dealer’s showrooms look great, but take a closer look. Check the thickness of your modular dealer’s core materials to see if they measure up to our standards: 3/4” finished ends, 5/8” partitions, 3/4” adjustable shelves, 5/8” fixed shelves, and 1/4” backs. Also, inspect their displays for face frames that overhang finished ends, creating a gap in the crown trim. Look for gaps in doors at pairs, cross-grain sanding on doors and face frames, poor joints between cabinets, gaps between face frames and cabinet boxes, and uncovered screw and nail holes. Open the doors and see if there is a lip at the bottom shelf that will catch on whatever you are removing from that shelf. We welcome you to visit our showroom and a modular showroom and make the comparison yourself.

Warranty
Both Morro Bay Cabinets and your modular dealer warranty their products against defects in material or workmanship. Morro Bay Cabinets covers both labor and materials, while most modular manufacturer’s warranties specifically cover only materials. Our factory-direct service people do Morro Bay Cabinets’ service work, not an outsourced subcontractor. Some modular manufacturers offer lifetime warranties on their high-end line of cabinets, but there are typically numerous exclusions.

Sales Staff
Our salespeople not only help you with your design and options, but as employees of the manufacturer, they are knowledgeable in all phases of cabinet construction. Any special or unusual construction changes or requests can be made easily.

Installation
Our installers are also cabinet makers; they know how our cabinets are constructed and have the ability to make onsite modifications if necessary. Because we make our own cabinets, any misfits, mistakes or damage can be quickly taken care of at our Paso Robles plant, whereas replacements for misfitting, damaged, or missing modulars will probably have to be shipped from an out-of-state factory.

Baked on Finish
We spray our cabinets in a finish booth with catalyzed conversion varnish, which is one the most durable finishes known. We have hundreds of stain colors to choose from and we offer glazes and distressing. Our environmentally friendly topcoat is a high solids, low-VOC finish that we bake on in a heated staging area in our finish shop. Read more about our finish process.

Selection
Modular cabinets generally come in grades—bottom, middle, and top of the line. These grades come with set standards that can’t be changed, so you may have to accept some things that you don’t want in order to get the things that you do. With our custom cabinets, there are not set packages that you are tied to; you can pick and choose whatever fits your needs and budget.
